Textile Doll

Ann Hord-Heatherley

I create figures from cloth.  My goal is to capture emotion in each piece.  The costuming of my figures is simple, and intended to capture a sense of time and place.  I often find inspiration in vintage photographs of women and children of the American South.

I hand dye most of my fabrics, often using botanicals.  I also like to incorporate vintage textiles, favoring those that have yellowed with age.   Old lace, handkerchiefs, and even curtains may find their way into my pieces. I use mohair locks from my goats for hair.

The Art Gallery at Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) unveiled a new exhibit, Origin, on display through October 29, 2017.  Two paintings by Paul Karnowski are featured in the show. Canned, Fresh and Frozen, and The Chicken and the Egg, are from the artist’s tic-tac-toe series. They ask the viewer to ponder where things begin and end

Karnowski will be featuring his large and small scale paintings at the Fall Safari.  If you are unable to attend, you may see his work online at paulkarnowski.com.  Alternatively, you may arrange for a studio visit– by appointment only.   Please call to set up a time.
